SOC 2 readiness / Field note

A useful evidence index starts with the control

Make it easier to explain why a record matters by connecting it to a control, an owner and a review period.

01

Start with the control

An evidence folder becomes difficult to use when its contents are separated from the control they support. Start with the control statement and describe what a reviewer should be able to conclude from the record.

02

Add the context

Add context: which system or team produced it, what period it covers, who reviewed it and whether it has limitations. Avoid collecting more sensitive information than the review requires.

03

Keep the source clear

Keep a source of truth and a clear link to the record. Before an audit, confirm the scope and requested evidence with your auditor. A well-organized index supports review; it does not prove a control operated effectively by itself.

Bring it into your next review.

A useful evidence record connects the control, owner, period and source.
